Herd Health

Mill Creek Veterinary Services is dedicated to the health and production of your herd. With 9 veterinarians and a diagnostic lab, our team is ready to guide you on the path to success by offering the following services:

Sick Animals

While we strive as veterinarians to always prevent disease and maintain the health of your herd, we know that this is not always possible. Inevitably, we will encounter sick animals. Our veterinarians are trained to treat and investigate health problems your cows or calves may be experiencing. Some of the common problems we encounter include mastitis, fresh cow diseases, respiratory diseases, abortions, dystocia, and diarrhea. At MCVS, there is always a veterinarian on call ready to help. Some additional services we provide include:

  • Field necropsies
  • Nasopharyngeal swabs for respiratory pathogen ID
  • Lung ultrasonography
  • Obstetric services
  • Surgery

Reproductive Services

At MCVS, we understand that the most valuable and productive employees on your dairy are your cows. From sun-up to sun-down, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, these animals are working for you to make a high quality product that you can sell. To do this, she must first get pregnant and have a calf. Our team is well trained and ready to implement a reproductive program customized for your herd and maximize milk production. Our services include:

On-Farm Consultation

The veterinary-client relationship is a key focus for MCVS veterinarians. Our relationship with producers is key to driving the success of their operations. As a multi-doctor practice, consulting with your MCVS herd veterinarian draws on the expertise of over 30 years in the business to help you maximize profitability through best farm practices. Some of our consultation services include:

  • Disease/outbreak investigations
  • Milk quality and parlor troubleshooting
  • Monthly reports
  • Farm audits
  • Employee trainings

Production & Performance Reports

In an evolving, progressive dairy market, we encourage our clients to constantly search for opportunities to improve their dairy. Your veterinarian, as a frequent presence on your farm, is an ideal person to monitor the overall health and performance of your operation. By providing monthly updates in areas like udder health, reproduction, inventory management, transition, and milk production, your Mill Creek Vet will be keyed into your dairy’s strengths and weaknesses, and thus identify your specific opportunity areas to make specific, targeted recommendations for improvement.

Goals:

  • Monitor key performance indicators and produce a monthly report
  • Give straightforward and concise recommendations for improvement based on findings

Parlor Audits

Parlor functionality is frequently assessed on dairies by milking equipment and supply companies.  Unfortunately, these audits typically fall short in assessing how milking is affecting the individual cow.  We provide something different.  Using technology and methods backed by cutting-edge research, the veterinary professionals at MCVS can assess vacuum, animal behavior, cleanliness, protocol, completeness of milk-out, and overall equipment functionality to ensure your milking is maximally efficient without negatively affecting your animals.

Sanitation Audits

Cleanliness during newborn calf management is an important part of providing animals the best start to a productive life in your herd. Regular sanitation audits ensure that calves have a healthy start and provide you with valuable information to direct management decisions.

Goals:

  1. Maximize the potential of each calf to thrive into the weaning period by ensuring a clean and healthy start.
  2. Identify high-risk areas for follow-up calf-management decisions.
