Laparoscopic Artificial Insemination (LAI)
- A minimally invasive procedure that allows for depositing semen directly into the uterine horns of the female.
- A technique that allows for a higher success rate versus traditional AI while also requiring a smaller insemination dose
- Allows for greater control over genetic progress as well as over timing of lambing or kidding
The Process…..
- It all starts with the nutrition and health of the animals
- Quality forage as well as concentrate, containing the right type and amounts of micronutrients and minerals, will help boost gut health and thus the immune system of the animals as well as aid in the development and quality of oocytes and sperm cells.
- It is important to work with a qualified nutrition expert to balance the diet for your specific needs
- It’s also important to work with a veterinarian to create a program that includes proper vaccination and treatment protocols designed to improve the overall health of your herd
How do I get my animals ready?
- Proper immunizations, quality supplements and other health management tools are important to implement at least 6-8 weeks prior to starting the program
- Minimize the amount of stress animals are exposed to, especially leading up to breeding. Stress can come from something as small as adding a new animal to the pen.
- Choose your genetics: One huge advantage to this procedure is the ability to bring in outside genetics (semen) from anywhere in the world. This allows for greater diversity within your herd as well as creating desirable genetic traits used for breeding stock or show.
Once my animals are prepped, what’s next?
- Schedule a time for us to visit your ranch to perform the LAI
- We do have an offsite facility for haul in if necessary
- We provide proven protocols for timing of CIDR insertion and removal as well as injections that will prepare your animal for timed insemination
- After the procedure, a low stress environment and top notch nutrition are paramount to maximize settling rates
